Earlier this year, we put out a teaser of the Filene Research Institute's i3 innovation community hitting the road. Well, the 17-minute documentary video is now complete. Matt Hawkins and myself filmed it and Matt did a fabulous job with the final edit. Over the past five years, I have had the pleasure of speaking at more than 40 credit union conferences in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Jamaica. It’s been a humbling and rewarding experience to share my stories to receptive audiences at state, national and international events. During this time, I’ve gained a lot of perspective on what makes an event memorable and worthwhile.
What happens when you put smart people on a bus, drive them to interesting places in Washington, DC and Virginia, introduce them to even smarter people, and challenge them to improve consumers' financial lives?
I made my maiden voyage to Wisconsin last week. Known as the Credit Union Mecca, Madison is home to CUNA, CUNA Mutual, WOCCU, CUES and the Filene Research. Matt Davis gave me the grand tour while I was there. It was a pretty cool trip.
Recently, I bought a new thermometer for our home. There was nothing wrong with our current model—it was programmable and did a fine job of controlling the heat and air conditioning. In fact, I had never given the subject any thought whatsoever.
We helped Tropical Financial Credit Union launch Young & Free Florida today. Based in Miramar, Florida, Tropical Financial has over $600 million in assets and serves 55,000 members in the South Florida market. Tropical Financial has a number of key components going for it that will make Young & Free Florida really work.
Five years ago this week, Larissa Walkiw and I presented at the 2008 CUES Execu/Summit in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Fast forward to 2013 and I'm back for another go. This time in Snowmass Village, Colorado which is just down the road from Aspen.
Over the past few days, I had the pleasure of attending the Credit Union National Association Government Affairs Conference in Washington, DC. With over 4,200 attendees, the GAC is the largest credit union conference in the world with the largest exhibitor hall of any financial services conference in the world.
We helped Guardian Credit Union launch Young & Free Alabama today. Based in the Montgomery, Alabama, Guardian has $225 million in assets and serves 34,000 members. While Guardian is the smallest credit union to undertake Young & Free on its own, it is one of the fastest growing credit unions in the state of Alabama.
